There is a strip of metal that costs less than $200 to install. It takes less than an hour to put down. Building codes in most California jurisdictions require it. And a surprising number of roofing contractors leave it out entirely.

It is called a drip edge. And if your current roof does not have one, your fascia board, roof decking, and soffit are absorbing water right now — quietly, invisibly, and expensively.


What Is a Drip Edge?

A drip edge is a metal flashing profile — typically aluminum or galvanized steel — installed along the eave and rake edges of a roof before the underlayment and shingles go down. Its profile is angled specifically to channel water away from the edge of the roof and direct it into the gutter, rather than allowing it to run back along the underside of the shingles toward the fascia.

It is one of the first things installed on a new roof or reroof. It is also one of the first things skipped when a contractor is cutting corners, moving fast, or simply underbidding a job.


Why Drip Edge Matters on the Central Coast

California's Central Coast creates roofing conditions that amplify every small installation decision. In coastal cities like Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, and Carpinteria, salt-laden air accelerates corrosion on any exposed wood or metal. In inland areas like Paso Robles and Santa Maria, wide temperature swings cause roofing materials to expand and contract repeatedly through the seasons.

In both environments, water intrusion at the roof edge is one of the most common — and most preventable — sources of long-term structural damage. Without a drip edge:

  • Water driven by coastal wind can wick backward under shingles at the eave

  • Rainwater running off the rake edge travels directly down the fascia face rather than into the gutter

  • Repeated moisture cycles soften wood fascia, promoting rot and eventually structural failure

  • Mold follows moisture — often establishing inside the soffit cavity before any visible signs appear at the surface

A properly installed drip edge eliminates these entry points entirely. It is not a luxury item. It is a moisture management system built into the first layer of your roof.


What Happens When It Is Missing

The failure pattern is consistent and well-documented. Water does not disappear at the roof edge — it finds a path. Without drip edge directing it into the gutter, that path runs along the underside of the shingle, behind the gutter fascia bracket, and into the wood.

Wood absorbs moisture. Given enough cycles of wet and dry, it begins to degrade. Fascia boards soften. Decking at the eave edge begins to delaminate. Gutters, no longer firmly anchored to solid wood, begin to pull away from the roofline.

By the time a homeowner notices peeling paint, sagging gutters, or soft spots at the roofline, the rot is already structural. What began as a $150 flashing detail has become a fascia replacement, a decking repair, and potentially a full eave rebuild — a conversation that often runs $1,500 to $5,000 or more depending on the extent of the damage.

Why Contractors Skip It

There are a few reasons this happens, and none of them benefit the homeowner.

Speed. Drip edge installation happens at the beginning of a job, before the underlayment goes down. A contractor moving quickly through a high-volume schedule may skip it to save time, knowing it will not be visible once the shingles are laid.

Low-bid pressure. When a contractor has submitted the lowest bid to win a job, material and labor cuts have to come from somewhere. Drip edge is an easy line item to remove because homeowners rarely know to ask about it.

Lack of accountability. Damage caused by missing drip edge typically does not appear for three to five years. By the time the homeowner notices a problem, the original contractor is long gone and the connection to the installation shortcut is difficult to establish.

California's Title 24 and most local building departments require drip edge on new roofing installations. But inspections do not always catch it, and not every reroofing job is pulled with a permit in smaller jurisdictions. The responsibility falls to the homeowner to ask — before the job starts, not after.


What to Ask Before Any Roofing Job

Before signing any roofing estimate on the Central Coast, these are the questions every homeowner should ask:

1. Will drip edge be installed on all eave and rake edges? A qualified contractor will answer yes without hesitation. Eave edges run horizontally along the bottom of the roof. Rake edges run diagonally along the gable ends. Both need drip edge for complete protection.

2. What gauge and profile are you using? Standard residential drip edge is Type C or Type D profile, 26-gauge galvanized steel or aluminum. Thicker gauge performs better in high-wind and coastal environments. A contractor who cannot answer this question has not thought carefully about your specific conditions.

3. Will the installation be visible in the final inspection photos? Any reputable contractor documents their work. Drip edge installation photos, taken before the underlayment covers it, are standard in a thorough job documentation package. If a contractor does not photograph their work, ask yourself why.

4. Is this included in the estimate, or is it an add-on? Drip edge should be a standard line item in any complete roofing estimate — not an upsell, not an optional add-on. If it appears as an extra charge after you have already signed, that is a red flag about how the rest of the job will be managed.
